WELCOME TO DECK THE HALLS FRIDAY!

The last couple weeks I have been getting all of my gifts wrapped, slowly Decking my Halls, I am still tweaking my tree...this will go one until January 1st, and attempting to get our house ready to put on the market. More on that next week.

It has been a crazy couple weeks...lots of orders (thank you!), Halloween, and my mom visiting. Now that life is somewhat back to normal...I can't wait any longer...the tree comes out today!

Welcome to Deck the Halls Friday!

What a week... 3 little ones home sick from school for the last 3 days. Needless to say I got nothing done. My plan was to spend the week crafting Christmas ornaments, instead I leave you with a pretty image I found on Pinterest this morning. (Ok, the week wasn't a total loss while cuddling on the couch watching movies with the little ones I was able to pin...) Love the pristine white pitchers displayed in the distressed cabinet, the pink/cranberry/white color scheme...I could never be that brave!

DECK THE HALLS FRIDAY - Christmas Bells

Welcome to Deck the Halls Friday!

I heard this week that there are only 11 weeks until Christmas! There is so much to do...

I have been pinning away, neglecting everything I am supposed to be doing, and came upon a fun set of vintage bells made from Christmas cards. Late last night I had to create my own.

Not perfected yet, but not bad considering I started this project at 10 o'clock at night. The originals were crocheted, I did a simple blanket stitch using enbroidery floss. The images I used were found on Pinterest

I think these are so sweet, reminds me of something that my aunt made back in the 70's.

Oh, how I love this time of year! There are Halloween and Fall decorations everywhere and Christmas decorations are slowly starting to appear. How cute are these snowmen I stumbled upon this week? He will definitley be finding a place in my home!

DECK THE HALLS FRIDAY

Welcome to Deck the Halls Friday!

Wow, the little ones started school this week and this is the first time in 5 years that I have had "me" time...surprisingly I got nothing done. Apologies for the late post, better late than never, right?

This week I want to share two things (1) my new 12" Ball Jar that I found at Target the other day (2) the Copper Wire lights I ordered for the shop came in and I LOVE THEM!

My new jar filled with a bottlebrush tree, artificial snow and lights

A closer look, I have two srands in the jar, one wrapped around the tree and the star lights coiled in the jar. I will post all the details next week, all I can say is they are so much fun and I want to wrap everything in lights!

I pulled a couple things to try in my new jar and Kate (she's 4) decided she wanted to decorate.

When I told her she couldn't have any snow she cut up her own and made her own leaves. Love her, she said, " Mommy, take a picture for your store".

Logan joined in...chicks? What can I say he is 5, and very proud of his contribution.

DECK THE HALLS FRIDAY - Decking my walls???

WELCOME TO DECK THE HALLS FRIDAY!

Really, Friday already...it sure snuck up on me this week. Last day home alone with the little ones before they all go to school, bitter sweet. Needless to say Christmas hasn't been on my mind this week, or so that is what I thought...

Nothing suspicious here...just adding to the photo wall outside our bedroom

(ignore the missing trim in my arch and the old table...just a placeholder to see how many times I run into it at night before investing in a new one)

Nothing unusual, that is, until I went to bed and noticed that a Christmas tree had formed on my wall...

The grouping initially started with the large picture and then the 3 underneath. The other day I added a photo of our cat that we lost last year and the doorknob hooks that now appears to be the base of a tree... Just goes to show even when I am not in "Christmas mode" subliminally I am!

HALLOWEEN MASKS ARE HERE!

Slowly the new Halloween collection is starting to trickle in...the latest to arrive are the HALLWEEN FACES MASKS by BETHANY LOWE DESIGNS. They are so much fun and I can think of about a million and one different things you could do with them!

I have been playing with them all over the house...I would love to see them on a big pumpkin! They are sized so that they could be worn but not that comfortable as they are a stiff pressed paper board, the witches nose does bend upward to go over your nose. I am crazy about the graphic quality of the masks. What would you do with them?

DECK THE HALLS FRIDAY - Wrap it up!

Last year I had good intentions, wrap gifts early...didn't happen. This year I am on the ball and three are done - yeah me! I even have a system...

Brown paper packages...can't help myself.

(Had to throw this one in, how cute is this Hello Kitty?!!)

Must have a notebook, DO NOT MISPLACE NOTEBOOK!!!

I don't like to put names on the kids gifts, they don't know which packages are theirs and it is a fun game for me ...so I number all of the packages on the bottom and I write the number and a description of each gift in my notebook. For example: Emma's gifts all start with a number two.

This I learned from my mom...I was a really good guesser. It was fun to try and crack her code!

Today I was so excited to get my first Halloween order I unpacked it at the front door and started snapping pics.

A tisket, a tasket, I'm making baskets... thanks to the fabulous Valarie over at GLITTERY DAYS & NIGHTS, who has been making the most adorable Easter creations, I am in the mood to make Easter baskets! This past weekend instead of cleaning up the kitchen while the little ones were napping I spent a little me time doing what I love...creating...

Not quite finished, a little rosette here or there, glitter (naturally) and a bit of tinsel (just for fun)

Nothing flashy or spectacular. It felt SO GOOD to starting from scratch, making it up as I went along and forgetting about everything else. Too much time has past since I did something just for ME. If you have little ones at home I am sure you know what I mean...

HALLOWEEN...in February?

Who's thinking about Halloween when we haven't even make it through Easter? Me and most anyone that sells seasonal decor. Vendors are previewing their fall and winter offerings as earlier as December. Seeing all the new goodies make me want to skip right to fall, as much as I love all those bunnies...I can't help myself. So I ask you this question, when do you start shopping for fall and Halloween?

This is one of my new favorite items by Bethany Lowe Designs for 2011.

Set of 3 paper masks. How cute will they be on a jack-o-lantern, on a plaster bust, in a wreath, tied around a glass hurricane, hung on the back of chairs, hanging in the window, I could go on...

If it is a great piece that I can't live without I will buy it anytime no matter the season. On the upside come September and October when there are other expenses like costumes, parties, and back to school shopping I will still have a great piece that I bought back in May to add to my collection. OK, I will probably buy a new piece in October too...then I end up with two (or three, or...) great pieces!

It's Party Time! - "OSWALD THE LUCKY RABBIT"

The girls will be 4 next month and we are in full-blown "party planning mode". This week's theme...OSWALD THE LUCKY RABBIT?!?! For months they have been talking about Rapunzel and Snow White, then it was Dumbo and the Mad Hatter's Tea Party...now it is Dumbo and Oswald...

It all started with this guy:

Emma LOVES rabbits, Mickey Mouse, and the color blue. When she saw him she went CRAZY. We watched a couple shorts on YouTube and she was hooked. Out went the Mad Hatter's Tea Party in came Oswald. Not the easiest to work with but this is what we have come up with so far.

SIXTY-FIFTH AVENUE CHALKBOARD PARTY

The fabulous Londen from SIXTY-FIFTH AVENUE is hosting a CHALKBOARD PARTY! I am cheating a little, my chalkboard was purchased and not made by hand but I wanted to join in the fun.

My little artists hard at work!

This chalkboard was a Homegoods find a few months back. The hands fell off somewhere between the store and the car, I didn't care I LOVE it anyway. One day I will get new ones...

What I really love are the clips on the side. Clothespins attached to a thick piece of twine threaded through holes drilled in the top and bottom and knotted in the back. Usually I have the little ones artwork on display but we changed it up for Valentine's Day.

MORNING WITH MY GIRLS

January 26th...really? A crazy and unproductive month it has been...even the tree is still standing (one of three is still up...at least it is undecorated). The month started with a sick Daddy, then Mommy, then Emma, then Logan and finally Kate...nearly 3 weeks of round the clock tylenol, thermometers, tissues and sleeping on the couch. We are FINALLY on the mend.

Yesterday the girls and I dropped Logan at school and spent the morning together...

An early morning at Target, we practically had the store to ourselves.

Next stop....Emma's first haircut!

Emma has been asking to have her haircut like Snow White. "To my shoulders mommy, I want it to my shoulders."

My girl looking all grown up...that's Hoppy she goes everywhere.

If you have or know twins you will understand how odd it feels when they suddenly are different. For three years their hair has bee the same, the clothes they wear are alike (per their request). Then suddenly they aren't the same. They are not identical twins (although people argue that fact with me all the time) but such a drastic change is a bit disheartening. It is yet another sign that they are growing up and aren't my "babies" anymore. Each has their own personality, their own likes, their own opinions, one loves blue the other pink. I love that they like differnet things and that they are best friends. Emma is thrilled and Kate, not so much. You see she recently saw Rapunzel and gasped at the end when she has to cut her hair. I fear Kate will never cut her hair. She keeps asking Emma "why do you want your hair short, girls should have long hair?"

WELCOME TO DECK THE HALLS FRIDAY!

This week I pulled out my trees and got to work! I have a LARGE collection of ornamnents, 100's... mostly blown glass everything from Radko to kmart and I love them all, but I do like to change things up each year. This year I decided to put aside my figural ones (reindeer, snowmen...) and bright colored ones and focus on just the shapes (orbs, tops, teardrops, reflectors and so on) and a softer color pallet. Here is a peak at my nearly complete 10 foot tree in the dining room. It is terribly crooked (I was too anxious to start trimming, should have fixed that first...someday I will learn and follow my own advise...) thus, I don't have a shot of the whole tree.

Before I get to the tree this is the small collection of ornaments and a foil garland that belonged to my grandma and grandpa. It makes me happy just looking at it...

Birds, I LOVE clip-on birds, they make a tree come alive and glass icicles are like icing on a cake.

I wish I had better pics and truthfully a better post but I am STUFFED and aparently I am joining a dear friend at Target in the morning (4am, ridiculous I know...)

DECK THE HALLS FRIDAY - TREE TRIMMING 101

WELCOME TO DECK THE HALLS FRIDAY!

I LOVE decorating Christmas trees, it truely is one of my very favorite things to do. As a little girl I always helped my mom and decorated my own little tree in my room. While in high school I worked at a fine dept store with an amazing Trim the Home dept that was known for their holiday decorations, here I learned how to properly light a tree. After doing that for 5 years I began an internship in the display dept at Walt Disney World where I learned from the most amazing people you will ever meet! What I am trying to say is I have learned from the best. Here are my tips for decorating an artificial tree, grab a cup of coffee it's a long one...

"FLUFFING" THE TREE

After putting the pieces into the stand go get a cup of cocoa and let the tree rest for a bit to let the branches settle.

Wear gloves, it will save your nails! I discovered this by accident on a cold morning, I put my gloves on and guess what NO MORE SCRATCHY HANDS! In the past I wore stretchy knit gloves, this year I wore rubber gloves because they were handy, worked great!

Start at the bottom and work your way up. Turning up the inside branches to help hide the trunk and make the tree look fuller.

Don't be afraid to add extra pine garland. If your tree is thin try sticking garland inside the branches your tree will look full in no time!

"TWINKING" THE TREE

Again wear gloves, makes all the difference, I am telling you!

If you are not lucky enough to have a prelit tree take your time when placing the lights. Wrap each branch from the trunk to the tip and back again. It takes time but it will be worth it! If you plan ahead stop your lights where each tree section ends. Next year all you will have to do is plug them all together.

Be sure to add lights to the inside branches and the trunk. It will make your tree look fuller and give you a nice designer look.

Allow about 100 lights per foot. This can be less. In my opionion many prelit trees don't have quite enough lights. Don't be afraid to add a strand or two.

Add colored lights to your clear light tree. One year I added a strand of green lights to a clear light tree and the tree began to glow! Have all white ornaments and want to change it up this year add pink or red lights. Or if the kids are begging for colored lights why not have both.

SORTING & HANGING YOUR ORNAMENTS

I love this step! Sort your ornaments by size, color, style. For this tree I sorted by:

Filler Ornaments Plain balls or ornaments you have alot of, these are tucked into the tree. Don't be afraid of green ornaments they work great as fillers and reflect the lights adding to the fullness of the tree.

Larger Scale Ornaments

For example this large red ball. I use this size to fill the holes and go on after my filler ornaments, they also get tucked inside. Keep the larger ornaments towards the bottom of your tree and the smaller towards the top.

Novelty & Special Ornaments

These are the ones you want to really show off and add personality to your tree. These go on the tips.

Smaller Ornaments Place these on the upper branches and fill in holes

Icicles and Finials

These I like to put on last and hang at the very tips of the branches.

If you follow the above tips your tree will have a nice layered look.

ORNAMENT HANGERS I am not a fan of wire hangers. They fall off, they tangle, and I just don't trust them. I also like my ornaments to hang close to the branches.

Here are my 3 favorite hangers:

Green pipe cleaners cut to about 2 inches they wrap right around the branches and disapear (you can barely see it in the above pic). They are easy to remove and are great if you have toddlers, pets, or if your tree is in a high traffic area.

Clear hair bands. Again they disappear and keep the ornaments close to the branches. Gently remove the ornament cap and wire and tread the band onto the wire. Replace the cap and you are done. They are not very stretchy so opt for the medium size.

Use the metallic string that comes on most ornaments and wrap it around the branch. You will see this on most department store trees. This is my least favorite of the three but for some ornaments it is a good option. Your ornaments will be secure and fit snug to the branch.

Another ornament tip: Remove the ornament caps and hot glue them back on. We did this at Disney and was great for transporting and packing away each year. Works especially well on wreaths or garlands. Takes time and you will burn your fingers but worth it.

BACK SIDE OF THE TREE

Don't forget the back of your tree! Even if it can't be seen. If you place lots or ornaments on the front your tree will lean forward. By placing ornaments on the back it will help balance your tree and your tree will look fuller.

GARLAND & RIBBON

My jury is still out on this one. Many designers say to do this step first. I have done it both ways. I lean towards doing it last. Garland is a nice addition to the tree. I like to place it where I find bare spots. When I put it on last I can have control of where it goes, tuck it behind an ornament, pull it forward and so on...

TREE TOPPERS Put it on first. I love the image of the father hoisting the little girl up to the top and placing the angel atop the tree. But in reality every year I hold my breath and say a little prayer and hope that the whole thing doesn't fall over. Many trees make putting a topper on almost impossible. I like to wire a dowel rod to the center of the tree and place the topper on the rod. This works especially well for finials. Also try nestling the topper into the upper branches and attach with wire or pipecleaners.

A LITTLE BIT OF CHRISTMAS...

On the way home from school today we saw the first Christmas tree lot of the season. I took this as my official sign that it is NOT TOO EARLY to decorate for Christmas. Yes, I have put out a couple trinkets here and there but as of today it looks like Christmas chaos...trees stacked in corners, tissue paper strewn about, and glitter seems to be coating every surface.

HAPPY HALLOWEEN FROM "Katy Gaga", "Emma in Wonderland" & a Cowboy...

I hope everyone had a wonderful Halloween. We had a great party complete with pumpkin carving, lots of food and trick or treating. May I introduce...

Kate as "Lady Gaga"

Kate fell in LOVE with Lady Gaga nearly a year ago. From that day she has talked about being "Gaga" for Halloween. When we are out and people ask her name she replies "I'm Katy Gaga"... She thinks she is a princess and when she sees something she thinks is pretty she says "it is SO GAGA". Her baby doll she named "Baby Gaga". This is her vision of Gaga. Per her request...a big black dress (nearly 100 yds of tulle), a sparkly necklace, a hat, pink lipstick, glasses (she misplaced them) and white "Gaga hair".

Emma as Alice in Wonderland

Emma is crazy for Alice both Tim Burton's version and the classic Disney animated version. I had so much fun making this for her! She wore a key and a bottle around her neck. The skirt is nearly 100 yds of tulle and her shirt is a plain t-shirt from target embellished with puffy tulle sleeves and collar. The headband is also from Target.

...and Logan as the New Sheriff in Town...a friend says he looks like a Val Kilmer in Tombstone! This one was easy, all from Target. He melts my heart (both Logan and Val Kilmer)...

Now it's time to get in the Christmas mood...I wonder how long I can hold off decorating?

I am a bit out of sorts this week. Getting ready for a Halloween party on Sunday, putting the finishing touches on the little ones costumes, and dealing with the terrifying 3's and the frightening 4's... The terrible 2's never entered our house. The occasional mini fit but all in all the kids were great. Once Logan started school things went downhill FAST. What fun ornaments these would make!

All of this PINK inspiration comes from my little Kate who today decided that it was time to move out of the room she shares with her twin sister Emma. Kate LOVES pink and has requested a PINK room. Emma LOVES blue. Our playroom is now Kates room. We moved her matress only until we know if this is going to work out. Tonight my heart is heavy, my girls are no longer together. It is probably for the best. They are very close but bedtime and naptime have become a battle. On the bright side I have a new room to decorate...

WELCOME TO DECK THE HALLS FRIDAY!

I know most of you are in full Halloween mode and to tell the truth I am too. It was a bit hard for me to think Christmas today, but while browsing around the GOOD HOUSEKEEPING website I came across this great wreath.

This wreath is made of recycled Christmas cards but why not try scrapbook paper, sheet music, old books, stiffened fabric...the possibilities are endless. For the HOW-TO CLICK HERE (slide 5). I can't wait to give this a try!

HALLOWEEN FEATHER TREE

I LOVE my feather tree, I use it all year. I am not sure what to do with it this year since the little ones are now roaming the house free of fences and gates... This is last years incarnation.

The banner, honeycomb owl, and bat garland are from Martha Stewart's collection a few years ago. They were last minute additions to the tree last year & I think I really like how it turned out. Perfect for our toddler Halloween party.

I see glass ornaments shattered on my tile floor. What can I come up with this year?

For every holiday I add something to the base of the tree. My cake stand gives it a little lift and has become a staple in my decorating.

DECK THE HALLS FRIDAY - PB KIDS INSPIRATION

Welcome to DECK THE HALLS FRIDAY!

This week's inspiration comes for the latest POTTERY BARN KIDS catalog that arrived today. I heart PB KIDS not only have I shopped their for years but their catalogs are magazines full of great ideas and inspiration. When I saw this page I was immediately drawn to the rosettes on this tree.

Most Christmas trees need one large scale "something". Usually it is a bow, flowers, a large ornament, or a continuous theme, I am over bows & flowers (even though I used poinsettias last year). Don't get me wrong both can be beautiful but I am looking for something different.

Simple accordian folded paper. LOVE it (& that star the glitter star garland). This week (time willing) I may play with this idea, maybe in silver....hmmm...

GETTING READY FOR HALLOWEEN - "Katy Gaga"

My 3 year old Kate or as she likes to be called "Katy Gaga" wants to be Lady Gaga for Halloween. She thinks she is a princess! Her costume still needs accessories but I had to share the photo of her first fitting...

Nearly 100 yds of tulle ribbon and counting...when she put it on she turned instantly into "KATY GAGA". We still need her wig, jewely, glasses, shoes, & gloves but you get the idea.

Next up Emma as "Alice in Wonderland", I've been busy making costumes & I LOVE it!

For me they were LOVE at first site! I immediately went to work creating my own little village. Forgive the photos below, they were taken a few years ago at night in my sons room.

Usually I create my own version of a project I see online or in a magazine to make it my own but these were SO PERFECT I didn't change a thing.

This week I am thinking about these adorable CLOTHESPIN ORNAMENTS from MARTHA STEWART. I have been admiring them for quite a while and have had the supplies since last year...They would be fun for the kids dollhouse and I think they will be ALOT of fun to make.

OUR FIRST DAY OF SCHOOL!

Today was our first day of school! My oldest started pre-Kindergarten. It was a very exciting day! We were all up bright and early, Logan's first words this morning were, "I am very anxious to go to school, is it time yet?"

On the way to school, he is starting to get a bit nervous. Emma gave Logan her bunny to hold on the way to school. He won't put his back pack down...

Poor Logan, looks like a deer caught in headlights, time to say good-bye to mommy...reality setting in! (still wearing his back pack)

Home! Kate couldn't wait to see her brother. It was a GOOD first day!

Today was an awfully BIG day in our house. Hard for mommy to see her baby boy out on his own, his sisters missing their brother, and Logan coming home with newly found independence. It was a good day. Next year they will all be in school, where does the time go?
